Armstrong returns – the Peanut Butter & Co TWENTY12 team was one of the most exciting teams – men’s or women’s – of 2010. Expertly directed by then retired Kristin Armstrong, the team won big races including the Giro, Gila and several US National titles. In 2011 the team makes more positive shifts as Armstrong returns to the peloton. Pictured above is Armstrong as she preps for the prologue at her first “big” race back, the Redlands Bicycle Classic. PB & Co TWENTY12′s Felt frames feature the world’s lightest SRAM RED componentry and world’s fastest Zipp wheels.
Always in the spotlight – the former (3x) National, World, and Olympic Champion returns with high personal expectations – TT gold in London. Armstrong considered the Redlands Classic a test to gauge her fitness. She retired immediately after the World’s in 2009 with plans to start a family.
Armstrong is highly respected in the peloton and serves as not only a team captain but a mentor for teammates. Here she shares a laugh with former National Road Champion (and SRAM RED rider) Meredith Miller (TIBCO).
The year off was very (re)productive as Kristin gave birth to now six-month-old (.5 years) son Lucas, pictured here at Redlands with husband Joe Savola. Kristin Armstrong-Savola keeps it simple and maintains original last name just for racing. Cousin Michelle holds Lucas after moments after Armstrong’s 4th place in the Redlands prologue, her first race on her new SRAM R2C equipped time trial machine. TIBCO’s Meredith Miller looks on.
Two wheels during the race and four wheels after – with teammates, friends and family all willing to lend a hand, Armstrong can focus on racing when she needs to. Here Green Mountain Stage Race winner and teammate Kristin McGrath carries little Lucas as Armstrong manages the stroller.
We will keep you posted on Armstrong’s progess with updates and posts here on theroaddiaries. Best of luck to her and Peanut Butter & Co TWENTY12 team in 2011!
