SRAM Favorites Return to Gila…Powered by SRAM

Known for her climbing skills and race savvy, Exergy-TWENTY16′s Mara Abbott will look to don the leader’s red jersey once again.

Silver City, NM, is an isolated town in the Pinos Altos mountain range that hosts one of most formidable stage races in America, The Silver City Tour of the Gila Powered by SRAM. The race starts today with the brutal Mongollan stage, and what follows is over 15,000 feet of climbing for the pro men, and nearly that much for the women, over five  stages. The notorious New Mexico terrain, the potential heat, and windy conditions always makes for a tough race, not to mention the competition. Stages for the 2013 Silver City’s Tour of the Gila powered by SRAM include:

  •     Stage 1, Silver City to Mogollon Road Race – Wednesday, May 1
  •     Stage 2, Fort Bayard Inner Loop Road Race -Thursday, May 2
  •     Stage 3, Dan Potts Memorial Tyrone Individual Time Trial – Friday, May 3
  •     Stage 4, Downtown Silver City  Criterium – Saturday May 4
  •     Stage 5, Gila Monster Road Race – Sunday, May 5

SRAM equipped teams include a long list of favorites, most notably the return of 2011 winner Mara Abbott in the women’s race. In fact Exergy-TWENY16 returns with a goal of keeping it in the family. The team has a great history at this Gila and has every intention of producing a top result.  Abbott is joined by Andrea Dvorak, Kristin McGrath, Lauren Tamayo, Alison Tetrick, Jackie Crowell and Rebecca Balboni. The race has been known to throw every kind of weather condition at the athletes, burning desert temperatures, near gale force winds and even snow. Every team will be focused on winning the locally crafted and highly coveted Tour of the Gila trophy bowl.

The men’s race is wide open, with NRC  leader Chad Haga of the Team Optum p/b Kelly Benefit Strategies making the start as a favorite.
