Having just raced the Chicago Criterium and in full prep for the latter half of the season, including the upcoming Tour of Spain, Astana’s Chris Horner took some time to visit and answer questions in front of a packed house at SRAM HQ’s weekly Monday morning meeting.

Questions came in all forms – diet (relatively strict), training (500+ miles for Grand Tour prep per week), personal goals (lead a team at larger events), 2009 (Radio Shack?), sacrifices as a pro (riding comes first), SRAM componentry (comfortable, efficient), how many water bottles can he carry at once (12+) and how much attention does he pay to his SRM (always).

Horner elaborated on numerous subjects including what it takes to be one of the best professionals, stating that “sacrifice” was most critical. “Cycling has to come before everything…because everyone at the pro level is talented.” He also spoke about the greatest cyclist he has ever ridden alongside, Lance Armstrong, and has hopes to continue that relationship on Lance’s rumored Radio Shack team.

Horner, who has had his share of injuries this year including fractures to his leg, shoulder, and ribs, will look for a solid second half and potentially working for the returning Alexander Vinokourov at the Vuelta. His immediate plans include the Tour of Elk Grove, which starts this Friday just outside Chicago.
