2009 Men’s Cyclocross National Championships podium – Johnson, Trebon, Page, Wells, Powers
U.S. Cross Nationals in Bend, OR, featured moderate temps and ground that was a combination of ice, mud, grass, with conditions changing every lap. Huge crowds lined a classic cross course that most felt would benefit the more technical rider.
The 2009 version was expected to be a duel for the ages with past and present national champions on hand. Five-time winner Katie Compton (Planet Bike) was a favorite and expected to repeat despite a recent cold. The men had at least three former winners present in Todd Wells (Specialized), reigning champion Ryan Trebon (Kona), and two-time winner Tim Johnson (Cannondale/Cyclocrossworld.com). Compton, Johnson and Wells were SRAM and Zipp equipped.
The Women began late morning, just as the sun started to heat the frozen ground, and it was Katie Compton taking the holeshot and, literally, never looking back. The battle for second place came down to Amy Dombroski (Schlamm/Primus Mootry/SRAM) and Meredith Miller (Giant Strawberry Farms). The two battled back and forth and Dombroski went down on an icy pavement and gravel transition that was shielded from the sun, Miller took full advantage. They were separated by less than ten seconds at the finish. Compton’s title was her sixth consecutive, a record.

SRAM swept the top three podium positions with Compton on RED and Zipp wheels, and Dombroski and Miller on SRAM Force. Miller also rode Zipp wheels.
The Men’s race was anyone’s guess with local favorite Trebon, on form Jeremy Powers (Cannondale/Cyclocrossworld.com), Jamey Driscoll(Cannondale/Cyclocrossworld.com), Jones (Champion System), Jonathon Page (Planet Bike), Johnson, Trebon, and Wells.
The race saw countless shifts of position but Jeremy Powers, through the first half, was on a mission. He took the holeshot had a good size gap to Trebon and Johnson at nearly 10 seconds just before the mid-point of the race. After J-Pow decked it on a stair transition, his teammate had no choice but to take advantage and try and gap Trebon, which he did, taking his third title and having nearly 20 seconds to celebrate.
SRAM and Zipp athletes took both titles for the first time ever; we congratulate every competitor and National Champion. Stay tuned for a complete total of SRAM Cross National Championships when we do a componentry count back this week.
